Since August is National Coffee Month, and coffee packaging design has been a large focus of Outlook Group’s flex and paperboard departments, we thought it would be appropriate to dedicate a blog post to the coffee industry.
State of the Industry:
According to the Specialty Coffee Association, the U.S. coffee market has retail value of $48 billion. While this is a large number, retail coffee sales have been growing at less than 2% since 2016, down from a 4.6% compounded annual growth rate between 2012 and 2016. Retail sales may be slowing in this mature market, but there is plenty of opportunity for growth into the future.
This year, the National Coffee Association came out with a study which stated that the daily consumption of coffee has increased from 57% of Americans in 2016 to 62% in 2017. Not only has the average daily coffee consumption increased, but the daily consumption of drinkers ages 13-18 has increased from 23% in 2014 to 37% in 2017, making that group the fastest growing generation of daily coffee drinkers. This is great news for the future of the U.S. coffee market.
Along with increases in daily coffee consumption, ready-to-drink coffee has been growing at a rate of 3.3% (2016). This rise has been partially caused by the rise of cold brew coffee in recent years. The cold brew process allows for a smoother cup of coffee with less bitterness than a regular brew. Today, cold brew coffee is popular among the younger population and is bringing specialty coffee to the general coffee market, creating great potential for the future of the U.S. coffee market.
