FOOD AND PACKAGING TRENDS AT IDDBA 19

IDDBA 19, sponsored by the International Dairy Deli Bakery Association, was held June 2-4 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. The show had a record-breaking attendance of over 10,000 attendees from food & beverage companies, grocers and retailers, distributors and other industry professionals who gathered to connect and learn.

In addition to the trade show itself, the IDDBA event offered educational experiences including a New Product Showcase area where exhibitors displayed cutting-edge products, packaging and services. The What’s In Store Live speakers on the trade show floor presented on market trends and insights. And the Expert Neighborhood offered opportunities to meet with industry experts for one-on-one coaching and advice. Questions about leadership, new retail, regulations and marketing were answered through these appointments. Experts included CEOs, entrepreneurs, authors and specialists who have the experience and knowledge of navigating through business challenges.

IDDBA’s educational and motivational speakers this year included Rick Findlay - IDDBA chairman, Seth Godin – entrepreneur and author of 18 best-selling business books, Mike Eardley, Laila Ali – daughter of Muhammad Ali, actor Michael J. Fox, Barb Stuckey – CEO of Mattson Research, and actor Rob Lowe.

Some of the major trends highlighted by the speakers included the surge in “Grab & Go” packaging options in the deli area which has historically been dominated by “behind the counter” meats and cheeses.

The focus on convenience was also evident in the large number of meal kit options that were showcased.

Other interesting trends to note are growth in plant-based meats, flexitarian diets, sustainable ocean “farming” and consumer interest in authentic, sustainable and artisan products.

Outlook Group’s booth highlighted the Bold Branding options offered through our packaging platforms along with the Bold Flavor technology of Flavorseal and Bold Technology of M&Q cook-in bags. IDDBA was attended by Outlook Group President, Kevin Hayes, Jim Woller - Market Development Manager, Folding Cartons and Flexible Packaging, Tim Hasty - Business Development Manager, Labels, and myself.

The IDDBA show is phenomenal for both the wide variety of samples available as well as the wide variety of potential connections. The OG team is following up on several significant leads as a result, and we're already looking forward to IDDBA20!
