Six Questions to Answer Before Your Next Packaging Project
October 20, 2026
The best packaging projects are decided early. A few answers at the start can save weeks of revisions, reprints, and line adjustments later.
Whether you’re launching a new product or refreshing a package that’s been on shelves for years, here are six questions worth talking through before the project starts.
1. Where will this package live?
A label on a refrigerated deli container faces condensation. A pouch headed for e-commerce gets dropped, stacked, and shipped. A carton on a pharmacy shelf needs room for regulatory copy. Start with the package’s real environment, from your filling line to the shelf to the customer’s home. It shapes every material choice that follows.
2. What does your line need to run well?
Your packaging has to look great and run clean on your equipment. Share your line speeds, applicator type, and filling setup early. Small details like roll direction, core size, or carton tuck style keep production moving.
3. What format fits the product best?
Sometimes the answer is obvious. Often it’s worth a second look. A product in a rigid container might travel lighter and stand out more in a stand-up pouch. A multi-pack might hold its shape and shelf presence better in a folding carton. Talking through cost, shelf impact, line fit, and sustainability early keeps every good option on the table.
4. How will you keep color consistent?
Your brand colors should look the same on every SKU and every run. Shoppers see your packages side by side: three flavors lined up on one shelf, or a fresh restock placed right next to product from weeks ago. Any shift in color stands out. Agree on color standards, proofing steps, and approval sign-off before the first press check. Working with a G7 Certified Master Printer facility helps keep color on target from one run to the next.
5. What’s the real timeline?
Work backward from your launch date. Build in time for artwork, prepress, proofing, plates, production, and shipping. If your timeline is tight, say so up front. A good partner will tell you what’s realistic and where there’s room to move faster.
6. What happens after the first order?
Think past launch. Will you add SKUs or flavors? Run seasonal promotions? Need variable data or serialization? Planning for growth now keeps reorders smooth and makes it easier to scale.
