Sustainable Packaging Without the Greenwash
October 1, 2026
Many brands we work with want their packaging to be more sustainable, but the hard question is what “more sustainable” means for their product.
The answer is rarely a one-for-one material swap. A choice that looks great on a spec sheet can add weight, shorten shelf life, or slow down a filling line. The goal is a package that does its job and has a better story at the end of its life.
Here’s how we help customers think it through.
Start with the product, not the material
A package’s first job is protecting what’s inside. If a lighter film lets moisture in and product goes to waste, that isn’t a win. So we start with your product’s needs: barrier, durability, and how it’s filled and shipped. Then we can look for the most responsible way to meet them.
Think about where the package actually ends up
Recyclable in theory and recycled in practice aren’t the same thing. It helps to ask:
- Is there a real collection stream for this material where your customers live?
- Will the label or sleeve interfere with recycling the container it’s on?
- Would using less material do more good than switching materials?
Know your options in each format
There are smart choices across every category:
- Labels: Thinner facestocks and liners that use less material, plus label options made to separate cleanly during recycling, so the label doesn’t hold back the container it’s on.
- Flexible Packaging: Lighter-weight pouches and films that often use less material than rigid alternatives, plus solvent-free lamination.
- Folding Cartons: Recycled paperboard options, plus a material with a strong head start: paper and paperboard are among the most recycled packaging materials in the U.S.
Weigh the trade-offs out loud
Every option has pros and cons. A thinner label liner means less waste and more labels per roll, but it may need an applicator adjustment. A mono-material pouch can be easier to recycle, but its barrier needs a close look. Good decisions come from putting those trade-offs on the table early, before materials are locked in and orders are placed.
Make claims you can stand behind
Any sustainability message on your package should be specific and verifiable. Vague claims can create more risk than value. We’ll help you understand what your materials can and can’t support, so the story on your package is one you’re proud to tell.
